Main Church of Figueiró dos Vinhos - Main altar
Booking
Originating from the 13th century under the invocation of Santa Maria, it emerged in the 14th century with the designation of S. João Batista.
It was rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Inside, the main chapel stands out, with its gilded altarpiece in the D. João V style, the painting "The Baptism of Christ" by the painter José Malhoa, and the set of tile panels by Teotónio dos Santos, dating back to 1716, representing scenes from the life of S. João Batista.
In the body of the church, it is still possible to admire an image of the Holy Trinity from the late 15th century, the image of Senhor dos Aflitos by the master Simões de Almeida Júnior, as well as paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries, and a burial chest (ossuary) where Rui Vasques Ribeiro and Dona Violante de Sousa, lords of Figueiró and Pedrógão, rest, among other works of art.
The church underwent remodeling work between 1898 and 1904, under the direction of the architect Luiz Ernesto Reynaud, with the exception of the Renaissance portal.
