Convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo
Booking
In 1598, the Convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo of the Discalced Carmelites was founded in Figueiró dos Vinhos, through the initiative of Pero de Alcáçova de Vasconcelos, lord of Figueiró and Pedrógão, and his wife D. Maria de Meneses.
It served as a College of Arts and stood out as one of the most remarkable centers of philosophical studies of the Discalced Carmelites Order in Portugal.
It possessed a remarkable altarpiece in its main altar, characteristic of many other convents of the Discalced Carmelites in Spain and Portugal. After 1834, the year when religious orders were officially abolished in the country, it became a House of Mercy and Hospital.
The Convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo is still the venue for the Conventual Confectionery Fair, which takes place annually on the last weekend of October.
