Aigra Velha - Schist Village
Booking
Aigra Velha is the highest Schist Village (770m), close to the peaks of the Serra da Lousã, yet easily accessible.
The cluster of buildings in this village is organized in a defensive network against weather, intruders, and wild animals like wolves, allowing communication and circulation between different spaces while maintaining each family's privacy.
The village is surrounded by some agricultural lands and a vast grazing area, from which you can see the Serra da Estrela and the colossal Penedos de Góis.
In Aigra Velha, you can hear old stories of merchant caravans that roamed the mountains and stopped to spend the night.
At night there were wolves, which led the inhabitants to block the village's only street and create internal connections between houses.
The schist walls, surrounded by green pastures, provide shelter before setting out to explore the Oitava Forest Park and the Ribeira da Pena.
