Alto do Calvário (Hill of Calvary)
Booking
Being one of the most historically significant sites in the village of Miranda do Corvo, the Alto do Calvário presents a striking image in Miranda's skyline.
Before its redevelopment, few truly knew about this space, its history, and the fact that there was a castle here that was part of the Defensive Line of the Mondego River.
The panels of the Via Sacra de Monsenhor Nunes Pereira (Stations of the Cross by Monsignor Nunes Pereira), created by the priest-artist, take us through the Passion of Christ towards the Main Church. At the Alto do Calvário, we can also observe the Christ the King, with open arms towards the village.
From the castle, only a cistern and an altered tower remained, abandoned to the effects of time, with the plaster and brick battlements crumbling. Through archaeological excavations, new findings have enriched this site.
It is now known that the Alto do Calvário has been used as a necropolis for at least 900 years.
The tower has been rehabilitated and structurally consolidated, eliminating discordant elements and creating access via wooden stairs with a viewpoint at the top. The tower has regained its watchtower dimensions, gaining elegance and blending contemporary elements with the past.
