It was a well-known tragic accident that occurred in 1955 during the celebrations of Air Force Day in Portugal when eight of the twelve planes in the formation, commanded by Captain Rangel Lima, crashed in the Serra do Carvalho.

Unfortunately, July 1, 1955, is thus linked to one of the darkest pages in the history of the Air Force, as it was the date on which its 3rd anniversary was celebrated.

On that day, the most tragic and regrettable accident in its history occurred in Serra do Carvalho - Vila Nova de Poiares, which claimed the lives of eight pilots and is considered one of the largest of its kind worldwide, given the number of planes involved.
