Castle of Arouce
Booking
Included in the complex of Sra da Piedade, the Castle of Arouce belongs to one of the first defensive lines created to control the southern access to Coimbra, in the second half of the 11th century. It is first documented in 1087 in the will of D. Sesnando Davides, where he declares that he ordered the settlement of the site.
According to an ancient legend, during the Muslim occupation, the castle was supposedly built by the emir (Arab chief) Arunce to protect his daughter Peralta and her treasures after being defeated and expelled from Conimbriga.
On April 27, 2019, the qualification and accessibility works of the castle were inaugurated, aiming to create safety conditions and content for its visitation inside.
This facility, classified as a National Monument, is part of the Network of Castles and Walls of the Mondego.
