The Obelisk of Foz de Arouce was erected in honor of the brave individuals who fought in the Battle of Foz de Arouce. It is a source of pride for the locals and commemorates the events that took place on March 15, 1811, during the retreat of Marshal Massena's forces in their struggle against the troops led by Wellington, marking the end of the third French invasion of Portugal.

This battle was part of a series of delaying actions carried out by the French troops under the command of Marshal Ney.
